10 Days, 10 Countries, 10 Songs: Day 9

On day 6 of this musical survey, I highlighted an all-male choir from Nuristan, Afghanistan. Today, I want to highlight an all-female choir from Bulgaria.

These are markedly different styles, but the keen observer may notice one key similarity: namely, that both cultures have an affinity for singing harmonies on the major second.

I sang in choirs for many years, and I know that it is incredibly difficult to sustain harmonies using such narrow intervals…yet these women do, and the result is incredible.

Haunting, heartbreaking, dissonant. This song breaks all the conventions of Western classical music, and that is precisely what makes it so moving, so awesome, and so inspiring.
