Beyond Dubai

Dubai has a lot of things to see: the world’s tallest building, man-made islands, and one of the world’s largest shopping malls.

For those who want to look beyond the glitz and glamour however, other areas of the United Arab Emirates have much to offer.

I spend some time in the Emirate of Sharjah and liked it a lot more than Dubai. It felt more authentic and more connected to its past. There are a number of museums and bazaars where local culture can be explored. And the desert beyond the city is beautiful…

  1. Really nice. Loved the pics and the authors’ own background. I’ve lived in Kuwait many years ago. My husband and I would go out into the desert and explore new places. Yes going off the beaten track is more fun.
    Looking forward to more blogs…

  2. Sharjah is an amazing city. It’s a lot more low-key that Dubai, which I wouldn’t be wrong in saying is one of its chief attractions. It’s very family friendly and has this strange way of letting you explore both the country’s past and its potential for the future while keeping you quite grounded. A trip to Dubai and the world seems to have changed and evolved and everything seems bright and shiny and new, and when you’re back in Sharjah it seems like the city is just ever so slowly and steadily carving its own unique path to the future and carefully taking its ageing past along with it.
