Band-i-Amir (بند امیر): jewel of central Afghanistan

Not far from the town of Bamyan, in central Afghanistan lie a series of lakes. They are often referred to collectively as Band-i-Amir, although this is only officially one of the lakes and each one has its own. The lakes are separated by natural limestone dams.

The contrast with the austere scenery that surrounds them and the deep blue that reflects the high-altitude sky gives the lakes an other-worldy feel.
